Surgery Information A General surgeon is a physician that has completed medical school and a residency training program where he or she specialized in surgical intervention of patients. The surgeon has studied the entire body of adults, children and neonates. At the end of the residency program the surgeon may decide to specialize in a particular area such as pediatric surgery, vascular, thoracic etc.. In urban areas the general surgeon usually limits their practice to the alimentary tract, breast, and or enodocrine system. In rural areas the surgeon's practice is usually much broader encompassing a wider procedure scope and patient age range. In surgery like any other profession the surgeon may have a special kinship or passion for a region and further limits his or her practice to that region or type of procedure (i.e., laparoscopic or bariatric surgery). Rather in a rural or urban area the patient will need to check with their surgeon to determine that types of procedures available in the facility the surgeon uses.
